About

The postgraduate Study Day is a yearly conference at the University of St. Andrews, organized by the postgraduate students in Film Studies, which aims to explore aspects in the field of film studies that are not covered by our research projects.

The topic of this year’s event, which will be held on 3 April 2013, is ‘Expanded Cinema’. We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Wanda Strauven from the University of Amsterdam, an expert on early cinema, technological fantasies and media archaeology, will be the keynote speaker. The concept of expanded cinema, which was first introduced in the 1960s-70s in relation to video art, is used in this context to refer to forms of cinema outside of the classical ‘cinema institution’. In addition to its initial 1960s attribution, topics relating to expanded cinema can include but are not limited to: film projections in galleries and museums, experimental and avant-garde film practices; early cinema and vaudeville exhibition; lanterna magica and other pre-cinema traditions; moving images in public spaces such as urban centres and film festivals; and new digital media that increase viewing mobility.

Following the event, there will be screenings in several locations around town of short films made as part of the 60 Hour Film Blitzan initiative of the Department for Film Studies which looks at growing our presence within the St Andrews community, thus introducing a practical element to our chosen conference topic.
